The two page document features notes on Book 7 of Virgil's Aeneid. The notes include the introduction of Camilla and summarised notes on the War on Latium. These notes are really helpful for students learning A Level OCR Classical Civilisation, specifically the World of Hero course. Background information of Mesopotamian Underworld- Kar also included at the beginning (honestly, you don't need to pay attention to those notes, just focus on Book 7, in this document)

Kar- Mesopotamian Underworld.

Ereshkigal- Goddess of the Underworld
Nergal (the husband/ God of War) who’d sometimes take over.
Geshtinanna- scribe goddess who recorded the names of the dead.

There was a water system (river) and a stairway that went directly to the underworld.

Kar consisted of Demons
- Lamashtu- child eater
- Galla- dragged mortals to the underworld
- Pazuzu- wind demon

Proper Burial- better conditions for mortals to face the underworld
Not good burial (e.g being burnt or dying in a desert)- suffers in Kar

Playing music during the burial of the dead, would help them less likely to suffer in the
underworld

People were encouraged to have lots of kids in families to pour libations to the graves of
their ancestors to reduce universal sufferings in the afterlife.
- Poured water through a tube to the grave to help their ancestors “drink”
- In the afterworld the only food or drink available was dust.

People were neither punished or rewarded for their actions in their lives, as there was no
form of judgement of morality in Kar.

Explain why Fate is important in the Aeneid and discuss the extent to which
Fate is influenced by the gods and goddesses. Justify your answer with close
reference to the Aeneid. (30 MARKER) ALSO HOMEWORK TO REVISE FOR!!

BOOK 7

The Trojans enter the River Tiber, next to the kingdom of Latium. We are told that the King,
Latinus, has a beautiful daughter named Lavinia, who is being pursued by many men,
including Turnus.

Turnus is a local lord. Latinus is told by an oracle that war is coming to the region and his
daughter must marry a foreigner.

Aeneas knows he has arrived at his destination. He sends an embassy to King Latinus
asking for land to found a new city. Latinus, knowing that fate will see that his city will be
destroyed if he resists, not only agrees but also Lavinia to Aeneas in marriage.
