[Total: 10 marks] Question 2 2.1 Languages are known for borrowing words from one another. i) In your own words, explain what you understand by the process of borrowing words from one language to another. (2 marks) ii) Provide three words which illustrate the effect of borrowing on pronunciation. For example, in the word ‘buffet’ which has been borrowed from French, the final ‘t’ is silent in French, yet most people tend to pronounce the ‘t’ in English. (3 marks) iii) Provide two words, from your own language, which have been borrowed from another language and show how the spelling of the borrowed words has been changed in the borrowing language. Indicate the language from which the borrowed words originate. (5 marks) (Remember to provide an English explanation to the meaning of the word). [Total: 10 marks] Question 3 Morphology 3.1 The morphological structure of a word impacts on its meaning. The word ‘connect’ can have different meanings depending on its morphological structure. Write five grammatically correct sentences in which you use it to show different meaning. Identify the part of speech of the word in each sentence. For example: Connect – verb. - I will connect the pieces of the toy tomorrow. (verb) Hint: the morphology of the words, or how they were formed should guide you to identify the part of speech. (10 marks) [Total: 10 marks] Question 4 4.1. Ambiguity refers to a situation where a word, phrase, sentence is open to more than one possible interpretation. The following statement can be interpreted in two words that are ambiguous. Jimmy told John to park his car in the garage of the new house that he bought. a) Identify the two examples of ambiguity in this statement. (2 marks) b) Explain in detail how the two words are ambiguous in this context. (4 marks) c) Provide your own statement that shows ambiguity and explain what makes it ambiguous. (4 marks) [Total: 10 marks] Question 5 Connotative and Denotative Meaning Connotation and denotation are the two of the principal ways for describing semantic meaning. 5.1 Explain the difference between connotative and denotative meanings. Provide an example for each meaning to substantiate your answer. (4 marks) 5.2 The line ‘son of the soil’ in the picture below is an example of how words or statements have both denotative and connotative meanings. Explain in detail how this line can have both denotative and connotative meanings. In your explanation refer to the picture to substantiate your argument.
