Unit 12- Crime and its effects on society Marcus Chadwick

Crime and disorder legalisation

To ensure crime was correctly fought a piece of legalisation was created. This is called the Crime and
Disorder Act (1998), this was made to help support crime victims, to give assistance to agencies to
ensure crime is being fought effectively and also to ensure proper sentences and orders are given to
criminals who have committed crime. The reason to create this legalisation was to ensure
communities are safe by putting reasonable sentences on criminals such as murderers. It was also
created to reduce the cost of crime to the tax payer. It’s also put in place to ensure that all the teams
across the public services are working together effectively to increase detection.

Crime and Disorder Act 1998

In a way to reduce crime the Crime and Disorder Act was created which local authorities, police and
other agencies all have to follow in order to keep the community safe. Every three years an
inspection of the legalisation occurs and find strategies to deal with these problems. The strategy
was to help authorities respond to the different needs of the people as some areas may deal with
more crime than others. The Crime and Disorder Act covers areas such as Anti-Social behaviour, Sex
Offences, Parenting orders, Child safety Orders, Racially aggravated offences. All the partnerships
that are involved in the crime and disorder act are stated below.

 The Police
 Community safety officers
 Youth offending teams
 Local Authorities

 The national association for the care and resettlement of offenders (NACRO)
 Victim Support
 Educational Establishment
 Businesses

Police Reform Act 2002

The Police Reform Act was approved and given a Royal Assent which means it’s passed its
legalisation through the parliament. The act has a lot of stages which states the aims of the act and
to ensure areas such as supervision, the function and the conduct of the police forces are properly
professional to ensure safety of the public and the police force. It also states the function of police
officers, other people and their powers to carry out things such as arrests when anti-social behaviour
occurs such as Harassment to others.

Criminal Justice Act 2003

The Criminal Justice Act was put in place to ensure a professional and fair criminal justice system in
England and Wales. This acts covers areas such as amendments to police powers, the release of
evidence, Appeals to prosecution, different evidence that actually counts as evidence and the
different sentencing to ensure if a crime was committed you are given a correct sentence length for
the magnitude of crime you have committed. It’s also stated in certain cases that judges sit alone
