Unit 3 Assignment 3 Legal and human rights that protect citizens and promote diversity
Marcus Chadwick

Unit 3

Citizens’ rights can be broken in a number of ways from their religion, sexuality, age or gender. The
rights of people are usually broken to a group who have a lesser power in society as the stronger
group can manipulate the weaker group due to their beliefs and values are more popular to the
government therefore have more of a following. Societies have made laws to protect citizens rights
therefore can’t be broken. The United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is a
protection act to support human rights and ensures that all citizens are treated fairly.

Human Rights

The rights of a human is something that they are entitled to ensure they are treated fairly and have
justice. The rights of citizens are usually written down which states what the citizens are entitled too
in terms of their rights. Britain does not have this constitution therefore it is believed that the
citizens have the right to do anything if it upholds with the law. These are called legal rights. People
can claim rights due to a belief of equality and fairness and this is called moral or human rights.

Universal Declaration of Human Rights

This is the most important rights act and was created by the United Nations as it ensures equality
fairness and justice to everyone. The UDHR was made after the Second World War as this has such
an impact on a global scale in terms of equality as the Jews were treated disgracefully during the
holocaust and the atom bombs that The United States sent over Hiroshima. These were tragic events
which millions of lives were lost in which called for an Organisation like UDHR to organise peace and
security. The newest form of the United Nations ensures the civil, political, economic and social
rights to all people no matter what age, gender, religion, colour, nationality or sexuality. The
advantage of this declaration is that it prevents another incidents like the two world wars from
occurring which could cause mass casualties so it stops conflict from occurring from different
countries and ensures the human rights of individuals are valid.

The United Nations:

 Ensures peace and security across the globe
 Helps build and ensures stability for financial markets and economies
 Promotes respect for human rights
 Provides aid in disaster situations such as an earthquake
 Ensures a friendly relationship between Nations
 Helps prevent global issues such as drug trafficking and environmental issues

Geneva Convention

The Geneva Convention was an agreement to take care of prisoners of war. These rules are agreed
internationally and ensure that prisoners when captured are treated fairly. The prisoners are entitled
to human rights and are protected from acts such as violence and insults. These prisoners of war
also keep all belongings on them and other soldiers do not have the right to steal during this
convention. The Geneva Convention also ensures that the prisoners of war get food and water and
clothes if necessary and in some circumstances, they are entitled to medical care if critically ill.
Prisoners also are allowed to complain if they feel they have been treated unfairly. The Geneva
conventions were brought in after World War 2 after the millions of lives lost. An example of an
individual breaking the Geneva Convention law would be Adolf Hitler and his Commando Order
