PSYC331 - Lecture 9 Peanut Butter, Jelly, and Racism Answer- Implicit bias comes out of normal functioning - growing up in a culture with media, images, conversations heard at home that lead to biases If you hear peanut butter, you will think jelly (a bias in your mind) Similarly, there is an association in the media between black men and violent crime Blind spot bias Answer- allows you to see biases in others, but not in yourself Explicit vs. Implicit Prejudice Answer- Explicit: deliberate and slow and/or controllable Implicit: automatic and fast and/or difficult to control The Implicit Association Test (IAT) Answer- Sort images from category as well as attributes related to category Example: -More incongruent when white people and bad, and black people and good -More congruent block when white people and good words, and black people and bad words (73% bias) A Note about IAT scores: NOT DIAGNOSTIC Answer- A noisy measure of mental content that fluctuates over time Think: blood pressure Doesn't predict an individual person's future behavior well from a single IAT Implicit Gender-Science Stereotypes Answer- For both male and female participants, it is easier for them to pair male with science and female with arts then it is the opposite This differs from self-report where they are not nearly as explicitly prejudiced -Among women, as they move from softer to harder sciences, their men = science implicit bias goes down (opposite for men) Roots of Implicit Prejudice (2) Answer- Our understanding of social hierarchy: What groups in society are higher status Our personal identity: Who we are, what our experiences have been
