Question 1

In Tutorial Letter 501, Unit 1, you are introduced to the idea of language as being a
ruled-governed system. Basically, this means that every language component/aspect
follows certain rules. Bearing this statement in mind, answer all the sub-questions in
this question. Before answering the questions make sure that you have read the sub-
heading Language as a system, specifically focusing on Table 1 in the Tutorial Letter.

Table 1 Language concept Meaning Phonetics The study of speech sounds.
Phonology The study of the sound patterning system. Lexis (vocabulary) The study of
the actual words a writer or speaker chooses to use. Morphology The study of how
words are formed. Syntax The study of how words combine to form sentences and the
rules that govern the formations. Orthography Writing systems Semantics The study
of meaning and how meaning is made and understood. Pragmatics The study of the
use of language in communication – i.e. sentences as used in contexts and situations.

grammatical correctness of sentences. Taking this point into consideration, read the
following text and answer the questions that follow. The lines in the text have been
numbered for convenience.

1 After a long life in the buzzing city of Johannesburg, Mr and Mrs Molefe moved
to a small,
2 quiet, rural town in the North-West. They explained that their children is adults;
so, there
