NR 599NURSING INFORMATICS FOR ADVANCED NURSING;Pre Tanic self assesment and reflection 2
NR 599NURSING INFORMATICS FOR ADVANCED NURSING;Pre Tanic self assesment and reflection 2 Informatics is used in my everyday as a nurse and before starting this class I wasn’t sure what informatics actually was according to our reading and research this week its described as “the science and art of turning data into information” (Chamberlain, 2019). I use this technology such as accessing patient’s health care records. I have concluded that we need data and that it must be organized, displayed, and transmitted for it to be used as informatics. There are many advantages of using technology in nursing such as education, research, and clinical areas. I perceived my competency level lower than I expected prior to taking the Pre-TANIC Self-assessment, I am not a fan of being on the computer unless I am working or doing schoolwork. My first real experience with computers was when I started my online BSN courses. Before this I would only use them while doing homework or researching something. After doing this assessment I have learned that I am using technology more than I was aware of. This is mostly at work with using our EMR and I am a super user and the unit’s resource. Even though I am a super user I do not feel that I am where I need to with technology today. Everything that I have learned has been self-taught with trial and error. I feel that I need to improve on certain areas such as being able to move folders or creating folders, updating antivirus software accessing my different drives. As an active floor RN in a CVICU unit my role changes frequently depending on the type of patient that I am taking care of as our unit has fresh bypass patient and down to telemetry. I use clinical data everyday within my role doing my assessments, vitals, lab work, and accessing patients’ records. Without being able to access these tools while at work it would make taking care of the patient a lot harder. One more competency that I use at work is doc halo, it is an inhouse text paging or electronic communication we can access on our phone or on the workspace on wheels. We can send messages to all aspects of the healthcare team. Resources that I have at work is our IT help desk, I have called them several times from password reset, or my work station won’t connect to the server, or even having issues for the signature pads not working for electronic consent. “In my role I must advocate for appropriate and timely technology, that is safe and manageable for our patients” (DiPersio & Gideon, 2015). Another resource that I often use at work is fellow staff members.
