ImmunoSero Lab - Q1 [Laboratory Safety]
ImmunoSero Lab - Q1 [Laboratory Safety] In general, we need to know the means to protect oneself, coworkers and civilians (patients) from different types of hazards present in the laboratory. - ANSWER-WHY STUDY LABORATORY SAFETY AND WASTE DISPOSAL? Personal Protective Equipment Hand washing Labelling Decontamination - ANSWER-Precautions Physical Biological Sharp Electrical Fire and Explosive Radioactive Chemical Ergonomic Cryogenic - ANSWER-Types of Hazards Chemical waste Radioactive waste Biohazardous waste - ANSWER-Waste Disposal Treat ALL human blood samples and other body fluids as infectious (containing bloodborne pathogens such as HIV, HBV, etc.) - ANSWER-The Universal Precaution (OSHA) Prevention of all kinds of infection spread via: • Hand hygiene • Use of PPE • Respiratory hygiene and cough etiquette • Safe injection practices • Safe handling of potentially contaminated surfaces in the patient environment. - ANSWER-The Standard Precaution (CDC) Chemical Fume Hood - ANSWER-Expels noxious and hazardous fumes from chemical reagents. Biosafety Cabinet - ANSWER-- Removes potentially harmful particles to the person working with biologic samples. - Has four described levels of biosafety CDC) The Chain of Infection - ANSWER-A continuous link between a source, a method of transmission and a host. 1. The source contains potentially harmful organisms 2. Microorganisms are transmitted to the host 3. The infected host becomes another source for disease transmission - ANSWER-The Chain of Infection Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) - ANSWER-Protects the user against health or safety risks at work. Protects the mucosal surfaces of the face and mouth. Prevents inhalation of airborne pathogens. 1. Laboratory Gown ⇒ Must be full sleeved, buttoned and made with water resistant material. 2. Safety Goggles ⇒ Covers both eyes to protect from splashes. 3. Face Shields ⇒ (Optional) Full-face protection from splashes. 4. Gloves ⇒ Can be made from Latex or Polyvinyl. Must be changed for every patient. 5. Masks ⇒ Surgical masks are acceptable, but masks such as N95 must be worn upon handling patients with Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. - ANSWER-SAMPLE OF PPE'S IN THE LABORATORY Hand Washing - ANSWER-Must be done frequently and to break the chain of infection. • After accidental exposure • Between patients • Upon leaving work area • Wet hands • Lather with soap • Scrub all the different parts of the hands • Rinse • Towel dry • Turn faucet off with towel - ANSWER-Hand Washing Procedure True - ANSWER-True or False Hand contact represents the number 1 method of infection transmission 1. Before patient contact 2. When gloves are removed 3. Prior to leaving work area 4. Whenever the hands have been contaminated 5. Before going out to break areas 6. Before and after using restroom areas - ANSWER-When is hand washing done? 1. Wet hands with warm water. 2. Apply soap, preferably antimicrobial. 3.
