Case Study Week 5
What are the goals of progressivism and what areas of society should be addressed?”
The main objectives of the progressive movement were eliminating the problems caused
by industrialization, urbanization, immigration and political corruption (Buenker 1986). “Our
aim is to secure the real and not the normal rule of the people” Roosevelt 1912. Progressives
want to put an end to whatever the government’s plans were for the privilege and sinister special
interest, and frustrate the will of the people, by putting a wall between them from which they can
fight behind and push back the reactionaries. Roosevelt stated that a Progressive is someone who
stands for social justice. These forms of social justice include protection for the factory girls
from the machinery, setting limits to how many hours women and children could/should work,
and ensuring suitable living conditions for people in crowded areas in city limits. They also were
working to improve the conditions for workers in the industry center, they also wanted to help
men living on farms increase their production and selling of such products trying to give them
the best lives possible. They stood for the minorities and wanted to ensure every individual was
treated equally and have all the same opportunities. Progressives also believed that concentration
of science, technology and education were the keys to solving all these problems.
Analyze what progressive achievements does Roosevelt Progressives highlight in his
speech?
Roosevelt discusses a few achievements in his speech. They include:
The corruption between people and politics and how to reduce it
