E-Commerce

Description of the technologies that are required for E-
Commerce
The technologies that are required for the E-Commerce is:

1. Browsers
2. Web Authoring Software
3. IP Addresses
4. Ports
5. Protocols
6. Database System
7. Domains Names
8. Browser and Platform Compatibility
9. Programming Requirements
10. Download Speeds

Browsers

Browsers are a piece of software and they allow you to access the internet. The URL is the browser
address is something which is typed into the browsers address bar and this therefore tells the
browser where to go to get the pages loaded up ready for the user. For example, if you type
www.google.co.uk into the browser address and this web page is not stored on a web server waiting
for your response where in fact it is individually created for the response of your request to get onto
the web page using your browser. Features of web browsers can be scroll down menu buttons,
toolbars, and tab windows etc. Some popular browsers which are largely known are Google Chrome,
Mozilla Firefox, Opera, and Safari for Mac OS and Microsoft Edge.

Web Authoring Software

This is something that is used to create web content and it is also covers a wide range of programs
for software. These programs can include; desktop publishing programs, web page builders, HTML
editors and word processors etc. The Web Authoring software is inexpensive, and an effective way to
publish products using media that is online. The main reason it is so good is that it can give you large
amounts of self-promotion and exposure to other people, however, the disadvantage is that it
exposes your personal information to unwanted people. The example programs for web authoring
software can be Adobe Dreamweaver and Microsoft Front Page.

IP Addresses

To make sure the right amount of data reaches the desired destination and each computer has a
unique address and this is called an IP address and this address is a set of four numbers and they
each range from 0 to 255.

Ports

A port to some people is a port of a phone like an extension for a phone. You can call the IP Address
to talk to the computer and then after, you can dial the extension to talk to the specific application.
An application needs to be listening on a port for the communication to happen.

Protocols

A protocol is something that is a language which two applications on the either end of a conversation
agrees to speak in (kind of like humans speaking English.) For example, if your application is sending
loads and loads of bytes to another application, then that application must know how to interpret
those bytes.

Database System

This is something which is a way of organizing data on a computer run through a set of computer
programs. Database systems remove the need for big manual setup files and a database system also
allows the data to be more secure, simplified and easier to find.

Domain Names

Domains names are something which are used to identify multiple IP addresses. For example,
www.xbox.co.uk this represents a huge range of IP addresses. And domain names are used in URL’s
to identify certain web pages. And when creating a website, use a memorable domain name so it is
easier for customers to find you across the internet. Submitting your website to as many search
engines is a good way to promote your website and to protect your domain name then register via
a .net version. Every domain name that has ever existed will have a suffix that will indicate what TLD
(Top Level Domain) it belongs to, but there is only a limited number of these:

1. .gov means the domain belongs to a government agency
2. .org means the domain belongs to a non-profit organization
3. .edu means the domain belongs to an educational institution
4. .net means the domain belongs to a network organization
5. .mil means the domain belongs to a certain military
6. .com means the domain belongs to a commercial business

Browser and Platform Compatibility

It is very important that a website is accessible to those who have diverse abilities to allow equal
access and equal opportunity. Accessibility is something which supports well-being for people with
disabilities as well as other people for example, elderly people, people in poorer areas, people in
developing countries and non-native speakers. The W3C’s job is to lead the World Wide Web to its
full potential and it does this by developing guidelines and products that will ensure the long-term
growth of the internet. The W3C association is an international community which has member
organizations which can include full-time staff and members of the public to work together to create
the web standards and this association is led by web developer Sir Tim Berners Lee.

Programming requirements

Web pages are usually written in a form of HTML such as HTML5 is the most modern example. And
within the HTML code, other languages can be used such as PHP, JavaScript, ASP, and many others
which can add functionality to a website. HTML itself will not provide E-Commerce capabilities so
another language must be used. When creating a website, HTML will use a set of tags which are
angle brackets and these contain the instructions to the website for the browser. All tags will use a
pair of open and close tags to ensure that the content inside is used. For example, <font color =
