As a new lecturer for IOP2601 module, you are given a summary report of student performance
in the module based on previous registration periods during 2021 to 2023. The report also
provides information on student profile, data collected from surveys, etc. The following
questions will be based on the information provided from the report.

QUESTION 1 [8]

(a) The summary report includes both descriptive and inferential statistics. Distinguish
between these two categories of statistical methods and techniques. Provide
examples. (2)

(b) Some of the information is presented in histograms, therefore you need to differentiate
between negatively skewed and positively skewed. Also, explain what these mean in
relation to student performance. (4)

(c) Distinguish between the measures of central tendency and measures of variability. (2)

(a) Distinguishing between Descriptive and Inferential Statistics: Descriptive Statistics:
Descriptive statistics involve methods and techniques used to summarize and describe data.
These statistics provide a clear and concise summary of the main characteristics of a dataset.
Examples of descriptive statistics include measures of central tendency (mean, median,
mode), measures of variability (range, variance, standard deviation), and graphical
representations (histograms, bar charts, pie charts). For example, calculating the average
exam score of students in the IOP2601 module for a particular year is a descriptive statistic.
Inferential Statistics: Inferential statistics, on the other hand, are used to make inferences or
draw conclusions about a population based on a sample of data. These methods involve
hypothesis testing, confidence intervals, and regression analysis, among others. Inferential
statistics allow researchers to make predictions or generalize findings beyond the sample to
the entire population. For instance, conducting a hypothesis test to determine if there is a
significant difference in the performance of male and female students in the IOP2601 module

(b) Differentiating between Negatively Skewed and Positively Skewed Histograms: Negatively

(c) Distinguishing between Measures of Central Tendency and Measures of Variability:
Measures of Central Tendency: Measures of central tendency provide a single value that
represents the "center" or "typical" value of a dataset. Common measures of central tendency
include the mean (average), median (middle value when data is ordered), and mode (most
frequently occurring value). These statistics give insight into the typical performance or value
in a dataset. For example, the mean grade of students in the IOP2601 module provides a
central measure of their performance.
Measures of Variability: Measures of variability, also known as measures of dispersion,
quantify the spread or variability of data points in a dataset. Common measures of variability
include the range (difference between the maximum and minimum values), variance, and
standard deviation. These statistics provide information about how spread out the data points
are from the central tendency measures. In the context of student performance, a high
standard deviation might indicate a wide variation in grades, while a low standard deviation

students for both assessments. The scores have been quantified using a scale of 1 to 10, with
1 being the lowest performance score and 10 being the highest. You did the summation
calculations, and the answers are presented in the table below.

(e) Calculate the performance of students on summative assessments when their
performance scores on formative assessments are 2 and 9 respectively. (4)
