Virginia Robertson, Publisher Publishing Concepts, Inc. 14109 Taylor Loop Road Little Rock, AR 72223 E DI T I ON 17 The Summer 2009 issue of the Wyoming Nurse Reporter (WNR) is dedicated to the practice of nursing in the state of Wyoming. The staff of the Wyoming State Board of Nursing (WSBN) have been culling our tele- phone and e-mail logs for the most common questions and pressing issues related to nursing practice. Several of these practice issues brought forth to the board have been highlighted in the articles of this is- sue. Usually, questions posed to the WSBN are in regards to whether some specific task or skill is within the scope and standards of nursing practice, as determined by the Wyo- ming Nurse Practice Act (“Nurse Practice Act,” 2005) and Administra- tive Rules and Regulations (Wyo- ming State Board of Nursing, 2003). However, before plunging into spe- cific questions related to scope and standards of nursing practice in this state, let’s first look at the definition of nursing practice. A quick review of one of my fa- vorite references, Encarta online dictionary and thesaurus, defines practice as “to do something re- peatedly in order to improve perfor- mance in a sport, art or hobby…to do something as an established cus- tom or habit…to work in a profes- sion, especially law or medicine… [and] the process of carrying out an idea, plan or theory” (Microsoft Cor- poration, 2009). Synonyms listed for repetition (as it relates to practice) are rehearsal, exercise, prepara- tion, training, run-through and drill. Synonyms for habit (as it relates to practice) are custom, tradition, way, system, routine, ritual, manner, praxis and method. I would like to take this opportunity to pose a ques- tion to each of Wyoming’s practic- ing nurses. Which definition best describes your nursing practice: 1) doing something repeatedly to im- prove your performance in the art of nursing, or 2) doing something by established custom or habit? Nursing has a long-standing reputation for practicing our pro- fession by tradition, intuition, and ritual. There is evidence to support that there are different ways of knowing and that each holds its own value.
