ENG1501
Foundations in English Literary Studies

100 Marks
Duration 4 Hours

First Examiners: Dr B. Janari and Dr C. Brevis
Second Examiners: Ms N. Zindela and Prof J. Murray

This paper consists of 6 pages.

Instructions:

The examination paper consists of two questions. You must answer BOTH questions.

Carefully follow the instructions given for each question.

You may use your primary texts – the short stories and the novel – to assist you, but you must
cite these correctly.

We recommend that you spend 2-3 hours answering this question paper.

Note: You have 4 hours to download this paper, complete the questions, and upload your
answers on the myModules platform. Check your timetable for the official cut-off time.

No late submissions will be accepted. No corrupt files will be marked.
No submissions will be accepted via e-mail.

IMPORTANT:
You need NOT use any other sources in answering these questions.
If you do, you must cite these sources correctly. If you use additional sources and do not cite
them both in-text and in a bibliography, you will be guilty of plagiarism, which constitutes
cheating during an examination. Remember to sign the Honesty Declaration upon submission.

If you are unsure how to submit your answers, follow the step-by-step guide we have uploaded
on ENG1501’s myModules site.

• The QR code is only scannable for a limited time and it should therefore be scanned
as soon as possible to start the invigilation.
• Ensure you are connected to the internet in order to log into the Invigilator App and scan
this QR code.

• You can click the "Finish Assessment" button in the app if you finish your assessment
early.
• If you are performing a written or Scan-and-Upload assessment:
• The Invigilator App may request you to take a picture of every page of your answer sheet
at the end of the assessment. Unless otherwise specified by your institution, this does
NOT replace the normal upload of your script to your institution’s online portal
• After completing invigilation and following all app instructions, you must upload your
Invigilation App data. If however there is a delay in the upload of the app data at the end
of the assessment, you should prioritise the upload of your script to your university portal
and you can temporarily minimise the app to do so. Uploading of app data is not time
sensitive and you can come back and do it after you have successfully uploaded your
script to the exam portal.
• Should you encounter any technical difficulty, please WhatsApp The Invigilator Helpdesk
