Unit 2
M2
Assess the importance of employability and personal skills in the recruitment and retention of
staff in a selected organisation.
The organisation I have decided to assess is Villiers High School, this is because the UK’s educational
system is incredibly structured, therefore for it work immensely in high schools it must be carried
out by capable employees.
It is important for Villiers High School to consider employability skills and personal skills when
recruiting and retaining staff. Recruiting staff is the process of finding and hiring the best qualified
candidate for a job opening, whereas retaining staff “refers to the various policies and practices
which let the employees stick to an organization for a longer period of time”.
The retention of staff is important to government owned businesses such as Villiers High School as
retention saves costs of recruitment and training replacements in the long term. Retention allows
staff to become more experienced over time, with more experience they are likely to have more
skills which allows them to become more efficient. Keeping retention of staff is important for VHS as
employees have gained experience in working in Villiers and have more knowledge of what they are
doing which could improve results for students.
Therefore the recruitment process is incredibly vital as if some employees do not like the job after a
short experience and decide to leave, the recruitment team will have to hire more candidates and
provide training, which would therefore increase costs. If recruiting was stricter initially, unreliable
candidates would not be hired and would save money in the long term.
There are many different factors to consider when employing new candidates as well as keeping
current staff, for e.g. meeting targets, having the correct qualifications etc.
Employability
When recruiting, VHS must consider candidates employability skills, such as vital experience,
relevant qualifications and knowledge of the organisation.
Employability skills are becoming more and more important as businesses are looking for skills
beyond qualifications. Experience of a specific role in recruitment and retention of staff at Villiers
High School is essential because if a candidate has experience then costs for training the candidate
would be low as they already have experience in that particular job. For e.g. if they have experience
in another school as a technician, those skills and experience can be used at this current school. Time
is also saved as the candidate can work immediately as they do not need extreme training.
Suitable qualifications would be essential to Villiers High School as they need an employee that is
qualified to teach a subject to younger students. Having qualifications shows that you have basic
knowledge of how to read and write including numerical problems.
Also, it is essential employees have an understanding of the service provided by VHS (teaching).
Candidates should research this government owned business and specifically the job role, they
should show off their understanding in the interview in order to impress the interviewee. Candidates
who understand the services VHS offers benefits the organisation, this because the employees
would know what level of expectation must meet and this encourages for them to work hard in
order to meet those expectations.
