Report

Introduction: I have researched about the different structures in a business, I have learnt about the
functional areas which consist within a business and I have looked at the shops roles such as a
marketing assistant. I want to put all this knowledge into use. I know want to learn about a business
that is in my local area and about its organisational structure. The business I have chosen is Tesco’s

Tesco’s structure: Tesco is a hierarchical structure because it has a large number of levels and also
a lot of people are accountable to more than one person prior to that information dig up to the
boss. A hierarchical structure has various levels. Each level is governed by one person. A
hierarchical organisational structure means that the sequences of command looks like a pyramid,
with a large foundation of workers, who are in straight line supervision by the smaller level on top
of them, who are sequentially supervised by the level over them, continuing on to the apex ranking
officer such as CEO Terry Leahy in Tesco’s Circumstance. This sort of structure allows the workers in
Tesco to know precisely what they have to do so they don't hang around until they are told. There
is clear authority and responsibility within the organisation that makes sure that everybody knows
what they are undertaking and know that there will be cost if the tasks are not finished on time.

Impact of organisational structure on job roles at Tesco:

The organisational structure at Tesco can also have an impact on the amount of motivation that
the workers have, some of the cashiers in Tesco’s may feel as if that there job is repetitive and
therefore find it motivating and they feel as if they have no support.

As Tesco is such a large organisation some job roles are going to be localised and they may not feel
part of the business as a whole.

Such as for example a checkout assistant in the store is known by their supervisor and department
manager, however, the regional manager and the director may not even know them because they
would only care for those staff who they meet on a regular basis this could cause the checkout staff
to feel unappreciated and neglected.

Since Tesco’s is a hierarchical structure, this means that the managing director who is responsible
for the business and the business Tesco’s has different layers of management to manage areas in
the stores.

Tesco has many layers to the organisational structure of Tesco which can mean that it is often large
and complex and intertwining. This means that it can be difficult for job roles to focus the
important area of the business and it may be that when a new job role is created that there is
overlap between different job roles until it is clear exactly what everybody needs to do specifically
for their job.

As Tesco is such a large organisation some job roles are going to be localised and they may not feel
part of the business as a whole.
