In 1907, with entrepreneurial spirit, Jim Casey and his old colleague, Claude Ryan, reunited and start a messenger service. They borrowed $100 and started the American Messenger Company in Seattle, Washington on August 28, 1907. The company went thru several transitions until February 1919, when the company adopted the name United Parcel Service, UPS. (Hoover, G, 2018). In 2017, UPS generated $54 billion in package operation revenues, delivering 5.1 billion packages and documents, with service area of more than 220 countries and territories. (UPS Fact Sheet, 2018). In order to achieve this, UPS is using advanced technologies and continues to create business solution using the latest technologies. It begins with scannable bar-coded label containing detail information of the package, including origin & destination of the package, barcode label of the tracking number, weight of the package and much more. This technology opens the ability to automate the process that follows the creation of the label, such as; data from entered to create the label is transmitted to UPS computer centers, which will assign the best route for the specific package. This concept of barcode labels is used in small packages, direct-to- consumer business, and business-to-business (B2B) shipments.
