DIABETES MELLITUS
,
,Management: 3 main principles:
- Drug therapy to normalise blood glucose levels
- Monitor and treat any diabetic complications
- Modify any other risk factors for other morbidities such as CVD
TYPE 1 DIABETES MANAGEMENT:
- Insulin is always required to control blood glucose levels because there is an absolute
deficiency of inulin with no pancreatic tissue let to stimulate with drugs
- Different types of insulin are used dependent on their duration of action
TYPE 2 DIABETES MANAGEMENT:
- Majority of patients are treated using oral medications only (not injected insulin)
- First-line drug for most patients with T2DM is metformin
- 2nd line management includes sulfonylureas (e.g., gliclazide and glimerpiride), DDP-4
inhibitors (-gliptins) and pioglitazone
- If oral medication is not controlling BM, then insulin is used
