Unit 9 – IT Projects Management
Assignment 1

Unit 9: Assignment 1 – Investigate the Principles
and Methodologies of IT Project Management as
used in Industry
In this assignment, I will be investigating the different project management
methodologies used in industries, evaluating them, and explaining the structures
used in the delivery of each project.

The Project Management Structures Applied in
Different IT Projects
A project is a collection of tasks that must be completed to achieve a specific
goal. IT Project Management is the process of achieving project goals in a
workforce within the constraints that have been set. At the start of the
development process, information about the project is provided and created. The
primary scope constraints are the goal, time, and budget. The scope is the
expectation of what the project should accomplish, the time is when the project
should begin and end, and the budget is the cost of the resources specifically
dedicated to achieving the goal. Typical IT projects involve software application
development, IT system and network installation, and data collection and
analysis.
Project life cycle
The project life cycle is a set of stages that a project goes through. This includes
five stages, which are showcased below:
 Initiating: This stage of the project life cycle consists of two separate
processes: the project charter, which is establishing the vision for your
project through the use of documents that you hope to accomplish
through the business, and the stakeholder register, which is simply
including and engaging the stakeholders in the project to secure their
approval.
 Planning: During this stage, it is critical to grasp the project's goal as well
as to establish how the project will be carried out. The following questions
should be answered to provide you with a clear picture of what the project
needs to accomplish. What exactly are we going to do? How are we going
to go about it? When are we going to get started? How will we know when
we're done? All of this is normally done in a team, which demands all
members work together to set up the entire infrastructure and assign
certain duties.
 Executing: This stage is where both the human and machine resources
are necessary to complete the task within the budgeting constraint
through distributing cost expense for resources. This includes project team
development, stakeholder engagement, and involvement from the project
team, project managers, executives, project sponsors, customers, and
users. Quality assurance entails inspecting the execution thoroughly to
ensure that the outcome meets the quality standard. Communication is an
important part of the executing phase because both the client and
stakeholders need to be kept up to date on the project's progress. Client

management - this reduces stress and makes completing tasks and
meeting deadlines much easier, as well as giving the project team insight
into what needs to be done.
 Monitoring and Controlling: This stage would involve keeping an eye
on the general progress of the project. Staying alert and up to date with
tracking and reporting with the team makes everyone more aware of
possible problems before they become unmanageable. Constraints like
time would be an issue to primarily focus on to ensure that the project is
not running behind schedule - a technique that can be taken to prevent
this, for example, is making weekly checks on where individuals are on top
of their duties.
 Closing: This is the final stage of the project life cycle which needs more
than merely reporting the project as finished. Formally concluding the
project requires consent from the customer, stakeholders, and project
sponsor (if there was one). Other activities involved in this stage to ensure
proper closing include confirming that the project was delivered on time,
conducting a review meeting to acknowledge the project's triumphs and
faults to learn from, archiving project records, and officially relieving the
project team of their duties.

The Characteristics of Different Methodologies
Applied in IT Projects
Project IN Controlled Environments (PRINCE2)

This is an approach that focuses on managing resources and decreasing risks by
dividing the project into smaller stages and establishing clear roles and tasks in
hopes to boost the project's progression. Starting up a project means
assembling a project team and appointing a project board, then preparing the
brief, understanding how to approach the project, and articulating the business
case. Initiating a project requires project control, including initial planning and
risk management, creating project files and project initiation documentation, and
refining business cases. Overall, Directing a project is just granting permission
for the project to be launched, the stages completed, and the project to be
closed. In essence, Controlling a stage involves monitoring the workforce,
measuring progress, investigating or escalating issues, managing risk, and
reviewing the stages. Accepting, executing, and delivering work packages is part
of Managing Product Delivery. Managing a Stage Boundary, which
includes planning and updating a stage and the project board, in addition to
updating the business case, registers, and exceptions plans. Finally Closing a
project that includes decommissioning a project and analysing the project's
accomplishments and failures at the end.
