Today, nurses are expected to develop cultural competence to facilitate their handling of individuals with different cultural backgrounds (Maier-Lorentz, 2008). The challenge associated with offering nursing services to individuals from different cultural backgrounds is evident from the case of Mrs. G. In the case, Mrs. G is depicted as a 75-year old Hispanic widow experiencing aging-related health deterioration, loneliness, and individuality. Therefore, nurses have to integrate collaborative and culturally competent care to maximize their welfare and satisfaction. Mrs. G's Feelings about Personal Life, Traditions, Family, and the Future The case indicates that Mrs. G views her life, family, and future from the perspective of the traditional Hispanic culture. The case shows that Mrs. G strongly values her family and Hispanic traditions more than her interests. Evidently, the lady experiences loneliness due to the absence of important family members, including her husband and children. Notably, the family takes a central position in the traditional Hispanic culture (Padilla & Villalobos, 2007). Members of the Hispanic community value the family over personal interests, which is observable in Mrs. G's behavior. The case also suggests that the Hispanic community upholds patriarchal structure that places men above women. In the Hispanic community, men are expected to assume the role of providers while women are assigned domestic and child-rearing roles. The case shows that Mrs. G relied on her husband for everything. Mrs. G also refuses to leave her family home since she respects her husband as the overall family authority. She feels that protecting a house that they had shared for 35 years will fulfill her husband's desire. She depicts high dependence on her husband based on the love and cares offered to her.
