, 1. Nyasha's anorexic condition in Nervous Conditions is symbolic of the

extreme measures some women take to resist patriarchal and colonial

oppression. Nyasha's constant studying and self-induced vomiting

reflect the pressure she feels to succeed in a society that values

academic achievement. Her perfectionism is a coping mechanism to gain

control over her life and assert her agency in a society that seeks to limit

it. However, the extreme nature of her behavior also highlights the

damaging effects of patriarchal and colonial oppression on women's

mental and physical health. By representing Nyasha's anorexia as a

symptom of societal pressures, Dangarembga sheds light on the ways

in which women in Zimbabwean society were expected to conform to

societal expectations that often resulted in psychological and physical

harm.

Furthermore, Nyasha's anorexia can also be read as a metaphor for the

broader struggles of women in the novel who are fighting against the

oppressive forces of patriarchy and colonialism.
