In this assignment I am going to use my experience in creating a team for my Crisis
Negotiating Team (CNT). When you are a POD leader your team is made up of at least 9
people. During a hostage or crisis situation people think the negotiator is the only person
working but it is actually a team of people working. The team is made up of the Team Leader,
Assistant Team Leader, Liaison to Command, Board Notes, Overhear, Record Keeper, Coach,
and the Negotiator. Each member plays an intricate role during the event, so picking your team
members is extremely important. This is what leads me to the first part of this assignment of
determining my goals.
My goal during any event is the preservation of life and making sure I have the right
members in the right locations is key to this success. Our POD is made up of at least 18 people,
and that is the event someone does not arrive or is not available. When I arrive the first thing I
want to determine is what is taking place. The type of crisis will help me determine what team
member would be better suited to negotiate. Once I get briefed then as my team members arrive I
brief them as they arrive so they can start setting up the equipment. Once equipment is setup I
assign someone to negotiate the “Throw Phone” into the affected area. I will pick someone that
has the ability to convince someone it is better to talk on the phone then to yell through doors.
While negotiations for the phone are taking place I start assigning the other positions and during
a real event I will place people where there strengths are. During practice I will put people in
different places for the practice and bettering their skills.
The second step of determining relevant resources comes into play when equipment fail
or someone needs a break during a several hour negotiation. Perfect example is the 15 day
hostage event that took place at the Lewis Prison Complex in Arizona which is the longest
hostage event in U.S. history. Everything that could go wrong went wrong in that event.
