WELCOME MESSAGE
Hello and Welcome to Sociology 40 Aspects of Family and Marriage, I’m Professor
Liz Roberts. I am delighted to have you in class to explore family and marriage.
SOC 40 will explore the social forces that affect law and conversely how laws affect
society. This course focuses on the interaction between marriage, family and
society by considering the historical and social influences on marriage and family
life and by examining how the family unit affects the social world. Readings draw
on theory, history, and ethnographic materials. More specifically, this course offers
students the opportunity to engage in critical sociological analyses of “marriage
and family” in U.S. society. We will analyze dominant conceptions of “marriage and
family” and explore the extent to which actual marriages and families in our
society live up to the dominant model. Primary attention will be given to the
contradictions between our romanticized conceptions of marriage and family and
our lived experiences of marriage and family life. We will explore how wider social
forces—including the state, the media, the workforce, race, class, and the
sex/gender system—influence both our cultural assumptions about the marriage
and family and our lived realities.

, Winter quarter is a 12-week quarter that runs from Monday, January 5 th 8:00 a.m. to Monday
March 23rd at Midnight. Online learning requires you to be self-motivated, disciplined,
and able to work independently. This course will be using the Etudes-NG classroom
environment for assignments, quizzes, tests and other course materials.
Participation in the online activities and assignments is mandatory for all. Failure to
do so will result in being dropped from the course and will not be reinstated (see
Lab section below for further details). Online learning requires you to be self-
motivated, disciplined, and able to work independently. Numerous students have
taken SOC 40 successfully in the past and all issues can be resolved the first few
days of the quarter. Get ready for a fun quarter! I hope that you will enjoy this
journey.
