Unit 1
D1- Analyse how cultural variation can effect communication

How culture effects how we communicate

Culture is a set of values that a group of people holds. Values can range from anything like
how we act or of how you judge one and other. All different have different rules and
regulations that make them different to everyone else. Like Muslims don’t eat meat that is
rules that they have in their religion. And having many different cultures in one country can
affect how we communicate to different cultures. It has become a barrier to communication
because the language they use is different and all the sings and symbols which also affects
non-verbal communication.

Types of cultural barriers

Language

Every single country has different languages and many do not know English or speak very
little English. And not speaking properly can cause many misunderstandings making it a
barrier to communicating. Different cultures have created their own languages and if
everyone speaks differently it can be hard to learn new languages. For example East and
West Germany separation has caused different languages to evolve. So if someone who was
German wanted to communicate in the UK they would struggle to talk making it hard to give
out effective care needing communication aids to support like interpreters or translators to
prevent this barrier effecting how we consult.

Example of how to communicate with someone with a language barrier

A patient is away on holiday to Spain and they injure themselves by falling down the stairs.
They notice a bleed to the head and go to the nearest hospital to get it checkout out. Upon
arrival they try to communicate with the receptionist but are ineffective as none of the
individuals speak the same language. The receptionist recognises this and goes to get the
interpreter to allow them to communicate. The interpreter uses both languages and the
professionals communicate and provide the individual with treatment and support them
with recovery. By doing this there is no longer a cultural barrier in place.

, Signs and Symbol’s

Non-verbal communication is also unreliable because like different languages all different
hand gestures mean many different things to different cultures. For example a thumb up
gesture is a sign of good luck but in Bangladesh it is taken as an insult. So seeing this can
make culture a huge barrier to how we communicate. So having non-verbal and verbal
communication ineffective we will need more aids like translators and signers. Making
communication with different cultures is impossible without support. So when needing to
communicate with someone from another culture by looking at their communication
passport of researching there culture you can be sure that no signs and gestures that are
offensive are shown in your communication.

Example of how to communicate with someone with signs being a barrier

A patient has recently moved to the UK and goes to the GP to become registered as a
patient. The GP is notified about the patient before the appointment and does research
about people from the country to see there likes and dislikes. The GP finds using hand
gestures in that culture is seen as threating. The patient then goes into seeing the GP and
from what they found they don’t use certain body language as it is seen as disrespectful. The
conversation happens and the patient feels comfortable when communicating. By
researching about the person and there culture before communication can give you support
that you can put into practice to make sure your communication is effective.

Stereotypes

Stereotypes are the opinions of someone of different appearance and many other factors
including culture. People belonging to the same culture have similar characteristics like
Muslim females all wear turbans and a lot of people have negative stereotypes on people
who look different. And this could be their nationality, age, race, religion or ethnicity. And if
negative stereotyping is done in the communication process people will have a view that
someone who looks different is seen as almost evil and treat them differently to how they
would treat someone local. Like being racist or not giving them the same choice causing
abuse so when communicating with someone no matter their background treating them the
exact same. To stop abuse and treating them the same to everyone else will keep equality
and prevent the barrier or stereotyping.
