UTIs account for approximately 40% of all infections annually, with a shocking 80% of the cases being hospital acquired UTIs related to the use of indwelling urinary catheters. It is well established that the duration of catheterization is directly related to the risk of the developing a UTI. Each day that a patient has a catheter in place, the risk of developing a UTI increases from 3% to 7% (AL-Hazmi, 2015). Researchers have showed that catheters are doing more harm than good. Catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) represent a large amount of hospital acquired (HA) infections (Rabideaux, 2015). CAUTIs are not only a patient safety risk, it also increases patient’s length of stay in the hospital, treatment cost and overall result in inefficient management of human and financial resources. An estimated $565 million in excess health care costs and approximately 13,000 deaths are associated with CAUTI each year. Due to the large number of patients that are affected by hospital acquired CAUTIs each year it is absolutely necessary to use evidence-based and best-practice solutions in order to improve this patient safety issue and reduce cost. Given the rising cost of treating CAUTI, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) identified hospital acquired CAUTI as one of eight conditions for which hospitals would no longer receive reimbursement as of October 1, 2008 (Quinn, 2015).
