600-700 word Essay on Using Authentic Materials and the Internet
Please write the essay under the four headings given.
a) The value of using authentic materials in foreign language teaching:
First and foremost, the meaning of authentic is something real, genuine not a copy. Authentic
materials refer to using texts, photographs, videos realia and other resources. Created materials
designed only for educational purposes can limit the students’ knowledge to the classroom
whereas authentic materials reflect real world uses of language. Reading materials that’s designed
specifically for EFL/ESL students are from authentic texts. Because authentic materials are not only
classroom structured it provides a way around teaching different cultures according to the target
culture of students. It relates more closely to the target audience/students. There is a wider variety
of lessons and ways of teaching ,no student wants to learn in a boring environment students want
something new and exciting and this is what makes the lesson constructive and memorable
authentic materials create an environment that sparks learners enthusiasm and the main aim is
not to limit a students learning to in the classroom if we as teachers broaden their knowledge they
will see the lesson in other things they do in their daily lives and always remember the lesson.
Students also will learn more than the expected outcomes .Whenever a teacher needs to plan a
lesson we always need to consider that materials strait from educational books or education
material’s may very well be designed for the age group and level but in a classroom not all the
students are at the same levels of understanding and so teachers face the challenge of materials
being too difficult or too easy or even worst boring ,a teacher learns her students over time and
eventually knows what methods they will grasp faster. Also, educational materials are not always
updated into current real-world situations.
b) Reasons for the selection of this text and the 12 vocabulary items. Rationale for changes to
text, if applicable.
For this reason, I have chosen the authentic text. “Overlapping emergencies strain the nation's
public health workforce and threaten critical vaccination campaigns ”
As it is relevant, current and also bearing in mind something that would interest an adult group, the
12 vocabulary items I have chosen is at a C2 Level and would be new words as well as relevant to
their level of understanding.
c) Why my activities are appropriate for this class:
Bearing the fact that this is an advanced and adult class I gave the dictionary storming activity as
it suits their age group and level of difficulty, I have chosen the second activity as a brochure so
that students understand the topic enough to teach it to the next person and the third activity to
broaden their thinking and understanding towards healthcare workers.
