Two propositions: Capacity for self-awareness and search for meaning.
Existential therapy definition
Existential therapy may be defined as a therapy that emphasises the human condition
entirely (Corey, 2017). The therapy uses a positive approach that praises individuals’ capacities
and ambitions, while at the same time acknowledging the individuals’ limitations. Existential
therapy believes that individuals experience intra-cognitive conflicts that are due to their own
interactions with specific conditions in their lives (Corey, 2017). According to the existential
approach the key concepts include: (a) capacity for self-awareness, (b) freedom and responsibility,
(c) striving for identity and relationship to others, (d) the search for meaning, (e) anxiety as a
condition of living, and (f) the awareness of death and nonbeing (Corey, 2017).
