Increasing Behavior(Week Seven Guided Notes)2022
Schedule of reinforcement rule that establishes the probability that a specific occurrence of a behavior will produce reinforcement. Two schedules provide the boundaries for all other possible schedules. - Continuous reinforcement - Intermittent reinforcement Continuous reinforcement (CRF) Reinforcement given for each occurrence of the behavior and is used for the acquisition of new behaviors. Extinction no occurrence of the behavior is reinforced Between CRF and extinction is the rule for intermittent reinforcement. Intermittent reinforcement only some instances of behavior produce reinforcement - used for maintaining behavior. DEFINITION of Continuous Reinforcement Reinforcement is delivered after the emission of each occurrence of the behavior. PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS DURING ON-GOING REINFORCEMENT of Continuous Reinforcement Rapid acquisition of behavior. Behavior becomes variable if maintained on CRF. Interval Schedules 1. Fixed Interval (e.g., FI 20", FI 20') 2. Variable Interval (e.g., VI 20", VI 2') Both schedules (FI and VI) are contingent on the passage of time. DEFINITION of Fixed Interval (FI) Schedule The first correct response after a designated and constant amount of time produces the reinforcer. PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS DURING ON-GOING REINFORCEMENT of Fixed Interval (FI) Schedule FI schedules generate slow to moderate rates of responding with a pause in responding following reinforcement. Responding begins to accelerate toward the end of the interval. The size of the interval influences both the pause and the rate. Example of Fixed Interval (FI) Schedule on a FI10 min schedule, the teacher would reinforce the first target behavior that the student performs after the passage of 10 minutes. PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS DURING ON-GOING REINFORCEMENT OF Variable Interval (VI) Schedule A VI schedule generates a slow to moderate response that is constant and stable. There are few , if any, post reinforcement pauses with VI schedules. Rate of response isinfluenced by the size of the ratio requirements. Example OF Variable Interval (VI) Schedule on a VI 10 min schedule, the teacher would reinforce the first target response emitted by the student on an average of every 10 minutes. Ratio Schedules 1. Fixed Ratio (e.g., FR 10, FR 20) 2. Variable Ratio (e.g., VR 10, VR 20) • Both schedules (FR and VR) are contingent on number of responses. DEFINITION OF Fixed Ratio (FR) Schedule Reinforcement delivered contingent upon emission of a specified number of responses PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS DURING ON-GOING REINFORCEMENT of Fixed Ratio (FR) Schedule After reinforcement a post reinforcement pause is produced. After the pause the ratio requirement is completed with a high rate of response and very little hesitation between responses. The size of the ratio influences both the pause and the rate. Example of Fixed Ratio (FR) Schedule on a FR 10 schedule, the teacher would reinforce every 10th appropriate/target behavior that the student emits. DEFINITION of Variable Ratio (VR) Schedule Reinforcement is delivered after the emission of a variable number of responses. PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS DURING ON-GOING REINFORCEMENT of Variable Ratio (VR) Schedule Ratio requirements are completed with a very high rate of response and hesitation between responses. Post reinforcement pauses are not a characteristic of the VR schedule. Rate of response is influenced by the size of the ratio requirements. Example of Variable Ratio (VR) Schedule on a VR10 schedule, the teacher would reinforce the student's target behavior on an average of every 10th target behavior performe
