Part 1: Understanding Ethics
[1.1] What is the subject matter of the discipline of "Ethics"?
The right and wrong in any scenario.
[1.2] Compare between "ethics' and "law".
Ethics is not binding and can change depending on the perspective that it is being
looked at with. Ethics also comes with either a reward or a punishment,
depending on how “ethical” you are.
The law consists of permanently set punishment controlled by higher authorities
(government) to maintain order and protect citizens’ rights. This is done through
enforcing rules and regulations, despite any opposing perspective someone might
have about them.
[1.3] Give an example for a scenario that could be described as:
Legal and Ethical Donating to an orphanage.
Illegal and Unethical Committing murder or fraud.
Illegal and Ethical Giving the homeless any leftover,

expired food from the restaurant that
would be thrown away.
Legal but Unethical Taking a seat from someone who needs
a seat (pregnant lady, old person,
handicap person…etc.).
[1.4] Compare between “values” and “ethics”
Values are different depending on different people. Not everyone shares the
same values as their importance varies on your background and family
upbringing/surroundings. Ethics are more consistent, and objective compared to
values since they are a set of moral principles.
[1.5] For the context of this course, what is the difference between "morals" and
"ethics"?
Morals refer to religious beliefs, whereas ethics refers to the community’s beliefs
as a whole.
[1.6] What do we mean by "Applied Ethics"?
Applied ethics is ethics that is more practical rather than theoretical. Discovering
ethics in the real world can be referred to as applied ethics.
[1.7] Give three examples of topics studied under Computing Ethics.
1 Wages in computer science industry.
2 How AI operates in a company.
3 Improper skills learned at a workplace.
