N5900 SP17 Exam Study Guide
This is not all-inclusive. You need to review class lecture notes and
assigned readings. The exam is 25% (40 questions) of your final grade.
Exam will be 60 minutes.
Burns & Grove Ch 1, 2 (Historical Development of Research in Nursing Section Not
included), 3, 5, 6, 7, & 8 are included in the exam.
1)Identify and differentiate between common types of
research
2)Define research purpose, question, significance, and
problem
- Research purpose is concise clear statement of the specific goal
or aim of the study that is generated from the problem.
Research question is concise interrogative statements developed
to direct studies that are focused on description of variables,
examination of relationships among variables, determination of
deference’s between two or more groups and predication of
depended variable using independent variables.
Research problem is area of concern where there is a gap in the
knowledge base needed for nursing practice research is conducted
to generate essential knowledge to address the practice concern
with the ultimate goal of providing evidenced based nursing care.
Research Significance indicated the importance of the problem to
patients and families, nursing, healthcare system and society.
3) Differentiate between basic and applied research
Basic research(pure research)- Generates Theories
(Scientific investigations for the pursue of knowledge for
knowledge’s sake or for the pleasure of learning and finding truth)
Applied Research (practical research)- Tests the application of
theories.
(Scientific investigations conducted to generate knowledge that will
directly influence or improve practice.)
4)Describe steps of quantitative nursing research
- Formal, objective, systematic study process to describe and test
relationships and to examine cause and effect, interactions among
vairables.
Types of quantitative nursing research.
1) Descriptive- Provides and accurate portrayal or account of the
characteristics of a particular individual, event or group in real life
situations for the purpose of discovering new meaning, describing

, what exists, determining the frequency with which something occurs
and categorizing information.
2) Correlational research- systematic investigation of
relationships between 2 or more variables to explain the type
positive or negative and strength of relationships in the world and
not to examine cause and effect.
Quasi -experimental –type of quantitative research conducted to
explain relationships, clarify why certain events happen and
examine causality between selected, independent and dependent
variables.
Quasi experimental there is no randomization, has
comparison group instead of control group
Experimental – objective, systematic controlled investigation to
examine probability and causality among selected independent and
dependent variables for the purpose of predicting and controlling
phenomenon . Has control group
A drug trail is as experimental research.
5 phases of quantitative research : conceptual phase, design
and planning phase, empirical phase, analytic phase and
dissemination phase.
6)Differentiate between (1) systematic review, (2) meta-
analysis, (3) meta-synthesis, and (4) mixed methods
systematic review
systematic review- structured comprehensive synthesis of
quantitative studies in a particular healthcare area to determine the
best research evidence available for expert, clinicians to use to
promote an evidenced based practice
Meta – Analysis – involves the statistical pulling of the results from
several previous studies into a single quantitative analysis that
provides one of the highest levels of evidenced for an interventions
efficacy.
(integrates findings across QUANTITATIVE studies
statistically)
Meta- Synthesis- synthesis of qualitative studies that provides a
fully integrated novel description or explanation of a target event or
experience versus a summary review of that event or experience,
requires more complex integrative thought in developing a new
prospective or theory based on the findings of previous qualitative
studies.
(Integrates and amplify findings across QUALITATIVE
studies)
Mixed method systematic review- synthesis of an of a variety of
study designs such as qualitative research and quasi experimental
