THE BROAD HUMAN MACHINE ENVIRONMENT SYSTEM
BASED ON THE PLANE:
A. HUMAN CHARACTERITICS
1. Psychophysiological State Variable
[Heart Rate, Skin conductance, Skeletal muscle activity]
➢ Heart rate = Affects pilot = Danger
B. THE PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT
(1) Climate
➢ Strong winds
➢ The cumulonimbus clouds (If plane happens to fly through one, it can be very
dangerous for the plane).
➢ Very cold weather - If ice falls on the wing it creates a physical reaction and you
lose lift, plane drops like a stone.
➢ Turbulence - Warm air causes plane to rise, Cold air makes plane sink.
(2) Illumination
➢ The Sun – Flying towards the sun is a major issue because they cannot see
outside, they can see but poorly. When getting close to ground, it might be a
problem coz they might end up crashing into the ground
C. SOCIO-ECONOMIC FACTORS
1. Family and home life
Divorce or family issues can be mental or emotional distractions.

How to explain the broad human machine environment in a car accident:
Example: How do they contribute to the poor safety level of accidents?
- Because accidents are not random
- Something in the system went wrong
Factors that may have contributed to an accident:
- Bad driving
- Poor maintained infrastructure
- Animal on the road
What can cause bad driving?
- Suicidal thoughts, harming others
- Illegally getting driver’s license [Stakeholder involved in this = corrupt
government]
- High level of unemployment: Since ubers are increasing people see that as a
job opportunity, people are rushing to get their drivers’ license.
- Education level [Socio-economical factor]
- Bad weather: Heavy rain [Climate]
- Reaction Time [Speeding can cause you to break late, and if you are speeding
and the person in front of you just stops, it results in an accident]
- Not being mentally Stable [Human Characteristic (Psychological Factor)]
Causes can be Stress and Anxiety which leads to
- Lack of concentration [Phone, heart attack, Drunk, Tired, and decreased
reaction time]
