Module 1.1: Computers in
our everyday lives
Why we use computers
Why we use computers
Why we use computers
Efficiency, accuracy & reliability. Computers have become an important means
of communication.
Let’s look @ these categories in depth
E – efficiency
A – accuracy
R – reliability
Efficiency
Computers save the following
§ Time
Wide range of time-consuming tasks can be performed faster with the aid
of computers. Computerized solutions save time. Some tasks need to
happen in ‘real time’.
§ Labour
They can perform tasks that could be dangerous for people to perform
themselves
§ Resources
Resources cost money & computers can be programmed to work more
efficiently with resources. Technology can be used to monitor & limit
carbon emissions in factories & cars, keeping the air we breathe cleaner.
Accuracy
, CAT
As long computers have quality programs & quality data, they are extremely
accurate. Accuracy that is repeatable is essential in mass production on
assembly lines. If the software is correct, the computer can perform the
same tasks over & over with 100% accuracy.
Reliability
Computers can be relied on to do tasks accurately. The creation of a
computerized solution to a task is usually time consuming & expensive. A
computerized solution is ultimately cost effective than other solutions. We
tend to use cost effective solution to a problem.
Communication
The acronym EAR, combined with the ability to communicate enable us to do
§ Virtually cancel time & distance as business constraints
Distance used to be a huge factor in business. The further away your
branch offices, suppliers & customers were the longer it took to
communicate with them & the slower the pace of business was. The global
reach & speed of computer-based communications mean that distance is
now only relevant when transferring physical goods. Communication isn’t
limited by time or distance
§ Communicate & share information in different ways globally
ICT gives us a wide range of communication methods. You can share files &
even work on the same document simultaneously with others. Information
can be shared via websites & generated collaboratively. Video conferencing
enables you to see the people you are talking to, no matter where you
are
§ Save on communication costs
We can use VolP software like Skype to make calls at a fraction of the
cost of a traditional telephone call. Documents can be sent to or shared
with people all over the world electronically at a fraction of the cost (or
free) via the internet
§ Internet socially on a world-wide scale
Social networking tools (social media apps) & blogs are used to share &
connect socially with others all over the world. People can generate
friendships & & contacts beyond the limits of their local communities
