Explain why there were changes in medical training in the period c.1500 – c.1700.
[12 marks]
– Vesalius – Fabrics of the Human Body 1543, anatomy
– Printing press – sharing of knowledge
– Royal society – published work, sharing ideas

There were significant changes in medical training in the period c.1500-1700.
Andreas Vesalius was a renowned anatomist. His book ‘Fabrics of the Human Body’ 1543
was eventually used as a medical textbook for medical students. He emphasised the
importance of anatomical knowledge in medical training, changing medical training in the
period c.1500-c.1700.
The printing press meant that knowledge could be shared more easily. This affected medical
training as more discoveries were being made and shared. Textbooks could be printed more
easily, reducing the reliance on the works of Galen and Hippocrates in medical training and
the influence of the Church in which knowledge was shared.
The Royal Society first met in 1660. The purpose of it was to be a group in which scientists
could share knowledge and ideas, leading to more experiments and discoveries. This
changed medical training in the period c.1500-c.1700 as it meant student doctors were
taught more and accurate medical information.
Therefore, there were changes in medical training in the period c.1500-c.1700 due to the
work of Vesalius, the invention of the printing press, and the establishment of the Royal
Society. These factors led to new discoveries being made and shared, causing a shift from
old ideas to newer, more accurate ones.
