Assignment task 1
unit 12 – enabling individuals with additional needs to face daily challenges
P1- explain diagnostic procedures to determine additional needs for one child and one adult with
different needs
Rebecca brown who is aged 8 was involved in an car accident when she was 5 years old Rebecca
would have received a lot of different diagnostic procedures to diagnose her physical disabilities
which were caused by a road traffic accident that she was in when she was 5 years old. The accident
led to her spine being injured. Due to this injury the doctors would have provided X-rays, CT scans,
MRI, and physiotherapy. These diagnostic procedures would have been provided and introduced by
a doctor. The doctor would also asses the accident and the injuries that were sustained in it, to
provide Rebecca with the right care that she needs holistically. The X-rays can can reveal vertabral
problems and any fractures in the spinal column. The CT scan can provide a clearer picture along
side of the X-ray and can outline any abnormalities to the spine. The looks at the spinal cord to
identify herniated disks, blood clots or masses that may appear. The images are then sent to a
specialist doctor who will examine the diagnosis and prognosis to help Rebecca. The specialist will
then make sure that the right support is provided to her.
Ben grace who is 52 years old has type 2 diabetes and Down syndrome . When Ben was diagnosed
with type 2 diabetes there would have been a lot of test procedures and steps taken to diagnose
this, one of the diagnostic tests would be a glycated hemoglobin A1C test. A glycated hemoglobin
A1C test is a blood test where the blood gets analysed specificity looking for blood sugar levels these
tests are done regularly over 2\3 months so that a average blood sugar level is found they would
compare there results with the guidelines set for normal blood sugar these are :
Below 5.7 % is normal
5.7% - 6.4% is diagnosed as pre-diabetes
6.5% or higher on 2 tests indicates diabetes
Aswell as Type 2 diabetes Ben has Down syndrome this is a genetic condition which occurs when an
extra chromosome forms at conception. People who don’t have Down syndrome have 46
chromosomes however baby’s like Ben who are born with Down syndrome have 47. Down syndrome
can lead to learning disability’s. The fact that Ben has a learning age of 8 indicates that he has
moderate learning difficulties. He could have dyslexia, speech difficulty, language difficultys, he could
also have slow motor development.
while bens mom was pregnant with him she would have been given the opportunity to Have a
screening test which is offered to every pregnant mother these tests would be able indicate what
the chances are that the mother is carrying a Down syndrome baby and then be offered a diagnostic
test which would be able to tell if the the baby 100% has Down syndrome. In the first trimester a
combined test is given this would consist of a blood test that would measure the levels of
pregnancy-associated plasma protein and human chorionic gonadotropin, high abnormal levels
could flag a problem with the baby. And also, a Nuchal translucency test which is where they take
measurements from a ultrasound of the baby’s neck if there is more fluid then usual in the neck
tissue this would flag abnormalities. After these 4 tests the doctor and genetic counsellor can
estimate the chances of her carrying a baby with Down syndrome. When bens mother was told that
she was carrying a Down syndrome baby by a doctor she would have been refers to a genetic
, councillor who will have gone through her options on if she wanted to take more tests to confirmed
the diagnosis. One of these confirming tests are Amniocentesis this test consists of a sample of the
amniotic fluid from the mothers uterus, the sample goes through an analysis to test the foetuses
chromosome. This test has a low risk of causing a miss carriage the genetic councillor would talk
through all the risks and options.
When Ben was born a Paediatrician would have ordered a chromosomal karyotype which is a blood
test that uses a sample of blood to analyse the child’s chromosomes to confirm the diagnostic they
would also asses his features and see if he had any of the physical features of Down syndrome these
include :
- A flat face
- A short neck
- small ears
- small hands
- small feet
- There Tongue tends to stick out of there mouth
M1– assess the requirements of one child one and one adult with additional needs
Rebecca brown has a spinal cord fracture which means that she has had no movement bellow her
cervical spine since she was 5 she is now 8 years old. Rebecca may feel socially isolated from the
world and her friends as she can’t get around and do normal stuff that every 8 year old dose like
playing at the park, going to sleepovers, play dates and school trips because of her disability . This
could cause Rebecca to have depression, someone that has depression requires a lot of support
from a mental health professional like councillors and therapists, this could gradually empower her
to embrace it and get out there and create friendships with other wheelchair users or join clubs in
the wheelchair community. Rebecca goes to a school that is specifically for children that have
additional needs the case study dose not state that she has any learning difficulties just that she
attends an additional needs school. Rebecca may have a mild case of dyslexia this could mean that
she requires a bit of extra support from the teaching assistant who is designated just for her. This is
so that she gets the best support with her education.
Her physical disability is classed as severe as the accident she was in has effected her mobility,
physical capacity, stamina and dexterity. due to the paralysis she got from the accident she can only
get around via her wheelchair and her caregiver. Following the accident Rebecca requires one to one
care wich is provided to her, one of the main things they provide is personal care this makes sure
that all of Rebeccas personal needs are seen to this includes bathing, showering, hair washing,
shaving , toileting, skin care and laundry. Rebecca’s mom is her carer she makes sure that Rebecca is
safe, and that all her needs are being supported.
Due to the trauma Rebecca could have received a head injury resulting in the development of PTSD.
This is post traumatic stress disorder it includes flashbacks of an event, nightmares, feeling overly
anxious and having difficulties sleeping. With this mental disorder, Rebecca could require treatment
this could be being prescribed antidepressants or psychological therapies like trauma focused
cognitive behavioural therapy or eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing therapy so that
this mental disorder doesn’t effect her life even more. Rebecca requires support from the housing
society as the apartment she and her family are living in isn’t suitable for the Rebeccas disability and
all of her needs. The apartment is small and isn’t wheelchair friendly if Rebecca wants to move
around the property it poses a risk that she will harm her self or damage something
