NSPS Certified Survey Technician Level I (CST Level I): Entry-Level Certification, Exam Format, and Work Elements
The NSPS Certified Survey Technician (CST) Level I is an entry-level national certification administered by the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS) for surveying and mapping technicians. It validates basic knowledge of field operations, survey types, field equipment, computations, plan reading, and safety, with no minimum experience requirement for Level I candidates . The exam consists of 200 multiple-choice questions with a four-hour time limit, delivered in open-book format (bound books only) via online or paper testing at approved proctor sites . The content is weighted across six work elements: Field Equipment & Operations (75 questions), Survey Computations (50), Office Operations/Plan Reading (34), First Aid & Safety (20), Survey Types & History (15), and Survey Control (6) . Certification provides official recognition of minimal competence at the entry level and serves as a career ladder foundation for advancement to higher CST levels; it is not a professional surveyor license . Beginning in 2026–2027, continuing education (2 PDHs for Level I) will be mandatory for renewal .
