Scope note: These notes follow the CAPS-amended Grade 12 Paper 1 topic distribution. Meiosis is assessed in Paper 2 in the
amended distribution, although it is useful background for understanding gamete formation and human reproduction. Check your
teacher's final scope and the latest DBE examination instructions.

1. PAPER 1 SCOPE AND EXAM STRUCTURE
The NSC Life Sciences examination has two papers. Paper 1 is 150 marks and 2½ hours. The CAPS-amended format uses
Section A for short-answer questions (50 marks) and Section B for structured questions (100 marks).

Paper 1 topic Guideline weighting Approx. marks

Reproduction in vertebrates 5% 8

Human reproduction 27% 41

Responding to the environment (humans) 36% 54

Responding to the environment (plants) 9% 13

Endocrine system and homeostasis (humans) 23% 34

TOTAL 100% 150

The marks shown are guideline weightings, not a promise of the exact marks in every examination. Topic emphasis may vary
slightly between examination sessions.

Paper 1 study priority: Responding to the environment in humans and human reproduction carry the largest guideline
weightings. Do not omit the smaller topics: they can still provide accessible marks.

2. REPRODUCTION IN VERTEBRATES
2.1 Reproductive strategies
Reproductive strategies are adaptations that increase the chance that offspring survive and that a species reproduces
successfully in its environment.

Strategy Meaning Example / significance

External fertilisation Fusion of gametes outside the female's body, usually in Many fish and amphibians; many gametes are released

Internal fertilisation Fusion of gametes inside the female's reproductive tract. Reptiles, birds and mammals; protects gametes and
increases the likelihood of fertilisation.
