NR 506 WEEK 3 DISCUSSION

Locate a state or national coalition advocating for your approved healthcare policy concern. Who are the coalition partners and is there an identified leader? Can you identify successes indicating strong leadership? What can you add to the content for your upcoming interview from the work of this coalition? Professor and class, A coalition is when a group of people starts working together in favor of community concern. Coalitions involve multiple community sectors and bring different people and organizations together to work toward a common goal of creating change, as well as address issues that would be difficult to manage by a single individual (Goldstein, Sapere, & Daviau, 2017). A coalition that advocated for my healthcare policy concern of obesity in children is the Obesity Action Coalition (OAC). The Obesity Action Coalition (OAC) national non-profit organization committed to giving a voice to the individual affected by the disease of obesity and helping individuals along their journey toward better health through education, advocacy and support (Obesity Action Coalition [OAC], 2018). The Obesity Action Coalition has more than 58,000 active members that focus on creating awareness and facilitate access to the prevention and treatment of obesity, provide education and treatments on obesity, and elevate the conversation of weight and its impact on health and offer a community of support for the individual affected (OAC, 2018). A leader that can be identified in this coalition is the President and Chief Executive Office, Joseph Nadglowski. Mr. Nadglowski has more than 25 years of experience working in patient advocacy, public policy, and education, and as part of his advocacy work, he has committed an important part of his work toward the acceptance of weight bias, its impact on those with obesity and our nation’s efforts to combat it (OAC, 2018). In order for success to accomplish strong leadership skills such as communication, self-awareness, and influence should be met. Health and safety programs must make a difference; accomplishing this requires effective leadership and governance, collaborating with a host of community individuals and organizations (Wendl, & Cramer, 2018). For my upcoming interview with the board member of the Hillsborough County School Board representing District 2, Dr. Stacy Hahn, I will add a discussion about what else can be done to minimize the stigma about childhood obesity in the schools. ..................................CONTINUED............................
