NATE Air Conditioning (AC) Service Certification
This is a professional certification for HVACR (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration) technicians, issued by the North American Technician Excellence (NATE), a non-profit certification organization founded in 1997. NATE certification exams are developed by industry expert committees and are designed to validate technicians' practical work knowledge. To obtain service certification, candidates typically need approximately two years of work experience. Certification is valid for two years, and renewal requires earning 16 Continuing Education Hours (CEHs) or retaking the specialty exam. If the certification expires, there is a 120-day grace period. Regarding exam content, NATE does not publicly release complete question banks, but official materials indicate that the exam is based on the Knowledge Areas of Technician Expertise (KATEs). Third-party practice questions cover the following core areas: Refrigeration Cycle: Evaporator heat absorption, metering device pressure reduction, superheat and subcooling calculations and applications, refrigerant charging methods (fixed orifice vs. TXV systems). Electrical and Controls: Contactor replacement considerations, compressor staging, lockout/tagout procedures, capacitor testing. Safety and Specifications: Proper leak detection methods (prohibiting use of oxygen or carbon dioxide), evacuation standards (500 microns), minimum condensate drain pipe size (3/4"), supply voltage tolerance (±5%).
