2 – marks question and answers
1. Define an automobile.
An automobile is a self-propelled vehicle for transportation of goods and passengers.
2. Define an engine.
An engine or motor is a machine designed to convert one or more forms of energy into mechanical energy.
3. Compare IC engine with external combustion engine.
The main difference is in the location of combustion. In external combustion engines, fuel combustion occurs in a
combustion chamber located outside of the rest of the engine. In internal combustion engines, combustion takes place inside
the engine.
4. What is the difference between normal control and forward control in commercial vehicles?
In normal control commercial vehicles, engine is located at the front of the driver’s cabto give more cab space, less noise,
heat, ease entry and exit.
Forward control is a body style of truck or van that has a vertical front or “flat face”with the cab sitting above the front axle.
In other words, it can be stated that engine islocated either at the side or below the drivers cab.
5. Why is a gear box necessary in an automobile?
Gear box is necessary to regulate both the power output and the speed range of the engine relative to the vehicle speeds.
6. What is the difference between conventional and monocoque chassis.
monocoque chassis are designed to minimize joints in chassis which shall help to increase durability and safety. In regular
chassis, there will be many joints which may result in poor durability and in case of impact the chassis may not be as strong
as Monocoque.
7. State any four reasons due to which the sparkplug may fail to function properly.
, The most common signs of bad spark plugs include start-up trouble, rough idling, sluggish acceleration, declining fuel
economy, engine misfiring, and engine knocking.
8. What is known as valve overlap?
Valve overlap is the period during engine operation when both intake and exhaust valves are open at the same time. Valve
overlap occurs when the piston nears TDC between the exhaust event and the intake event.
9. What are the functions of frames in automobiles?
Functions. The main functions of a frame in a motor vehicle are: To support the vehicle's mechanical components and body.
To deal with static and dynamic loads without undue deflection or distortion.
10. What are the materials used for Cylinder block and Oil fan?
The base of a reciprocating internal combustion engine is the engine block, which is typically made of cast iron (due to its
good wear resistance and low cost) or aluminum. In the latter case, the cylinder liners are made of cast iron or steel, or a
coating such as nikasil or alusil.
13 and 15 marks question and answers
11. Explain with neat sketch various frames used in automobiles.
