, 1. Parts of Speech
Words are grouped according to the jobs they do in a sentence. Understanding these groups helps you write
accurately and identify grammar errors.

Part Function Example

Noun Names a person, place, thing, or idea. student, Dhaka, honesty

Pronoun Replaces a noun. he, they, it, we

Verb Shows an action or state. write, think, is

Adjective Describes a noun or pronoun. bright, careful, useful

Adverb Modifies a verb, adjective, or adverb. quickly, very, carefully

Preposition Shows a relationship, often of place or time. in, on, under, before

Conjunction Connects words or clauses. and, but, because

Interjection Expresses sudden feeling. Oh! Wow! Alas!

Sentence structure
Subject + Verb + Object: The student (subject) reads (verb) a book (object).

Simple sentence: I study every evening.

Compound sentence: I studied hard, and I passed the test.

Complex sentence: I passed the test because I studied hard.

Tip: A complete sentence normally needs a subject and a finite verb, and it must express a complete thought.

2. English Tenses: Quick Revision
Tense helps show when an action happens. The examples below use the verb “study.”

Tense Basic pattern Example

Present simple Subject + base verb (s/es for he/she/it) She studies every day.

Present continuous am/is/are + verb-ing She is studying now.

Present perfect has/have + past participle She has studied the lesson.

Present perfect continuous has/have been + verb-ing She has been studying for an hour.

Past simple past form of verb She studied yesterday.

Past continuous was/were + verb-ing She was studying at 8 pm.

Past perfect had + past participle She had studied before the test.

Future simple will + base verb She will study tomorrow.

Remember: time expressions such as every day, now, yesterday, since, for, and tomorrow can help you identify the intended
tense, but meaning and context matter too.
