A. Reflect on the scores you gave yourself on the attached “Teaching Practice
SelfInventory by doing the following:
1. The lesson I will be reflecting on is a first-grade math lesson on solving word problems
using addition and subtraction.
a. Planning: When planning this lesson, I began by reviewing the learning goal and
the resources provided by the i-Ready Curriculum. By reviewing the learning goal
and available resources, I was able to plan instruction that addressed the needs of
all my students. For example, I anticipated that students might struggle with
vocabulary such as part, part, whole, so I made sure our part-part-whole anchor
chart was visible in the classroom for students to reference. Based on previous
lessons, I also knew that students had struggled with reading word problems, so I
made a note to remind myself to model strategies we had previously learned for
reading and understanding math word problems. After reviewing the resources
and learning goal, I identified the materials I would need for the lesson. I
prepared my i-Ready instructional slides and gathered the materials for students,
including markers, blank paper, and our class addition and subtraction strategies
anchor chart. Finally, I pre-planned students' A/B partners for turn-and-talk and
partner work, making sure they were paired to encourage both students to
participate and share their thinking.
b. Instruction: I started my lesson by reviewing strategies for reading and
understanding math word problems. I modeled reading the math problem twice,
identifying the two important numbers, underlining the question, and determining
whether the story Instruction: I started my lesson by reviewing how we read math
