Mitosis Virtual Lab
Part One: Onion Root Tip Cell:
In order for organisms to grow, cells need to divide. Cell division occurs in several phases to allow for synthesis
of new organelles, DNA replication and cell division. During interphase the cell will move through phases of
growth and synthesis of new DNA. After interphase, the cell enters mitosis. Mitosis can be divided into several
phases of chromosome formation and separation to form a new cell.
All of the phases of cell division require a different amount of time to complete. This can be demonstrated by
counting the number of onion root tip cells in the four phases of mitosis and in interphase.
Procedures:
1. Go to the “online onion root tips” of the Biology Project (University of Arizona). Use this link:
Online Onion Root Tips
2. Read about the stages of the cell cycle.
3. Follow the online lab to complete Table A (below). You will be identifying cells and classifying them
into the correct phase of the cell cycle.
4. Calculate the “percent of cells” for each phase of the life cycle to solve for minutes taken in each phase.
Example:
a. What percentage of cells are in Interphase?
20/36= 0.556 x 100= 55.6%
5. Onion cells require about 24 hours to complete the entire cell cycle. So with some simple calculating we
can determine the percent of time required for each phase and the amount of time spent in each phase.
Follow along to solve each step. Then repeat for each phase.
a. How many minutes in 24 hours?
24x60=1440 minutes
b. How many minutes in Interphase?
20/36= 0.556 x 1440= 800.64
