1 Digital SAT Math: Test Anatomy & Adaptive Strategy
1.1 The Exact Structure You Are Walking Into
The Math section is 70 minutes, split into two 35-minute modules, and contains 44 questions in
total. It is section-adaptive: the difficulty of Module 2 is chosen by your performance on Module 1.
This single fact should drive your entire pacing strategy.
Component Time Questions What It Means For You
Module 1 35 min 22 Mixed easy/medium/
hard. Your score here
sets Module 2′s diffi-
culty.
Module 2 35 min 22 Either the harder or eas-
ier branch. Both are
worth the same raw
points.
Total Math 70 min 44 Roughly 95 seconds per
question, but that aver-
age is a trap.
1.2 Domain Weights: Where the 44 Questions Actually Go
Domain Questions Share Highest-Yield Subskill
Algebra 13-15 about 32% Systems of two linear equa-
tions
Advanced Math 13-15 about 32% Quadratic vertex and root
structure
Problem-Solving & Data 5-7 about 14% Percent change and two-way
Analysis tables
Geometry & Trigonometry 5-7 about 14% Right-triangle trigonometry
The strategic read: Algebra plus Advanced Math is roughly 64% of the section. If you are deciding
where to spend your last three study hours, spend them there. Geometry is only about 6 questions
and most of it is formula recall from the reference sheet.
1.3 Multiple Choice vs. Student-Produced Response
Approximately 75% of questions are four-option multiple choice. The remaining 25% are student-
produced response (SPR), where you type your own answer into a box with no answer choices to
work backward from.

COMMON PITFALL & EXAM TRAP
SPR questions have no answer choices, so the single most valuable multiple-choice technique
(plugging the choices back in) is unavailable. You must produce the answer. Also: SPR answers are
never negative and never contain a comma or a percent sign. If you compute −4 or 1{, }250 or
45%, you have made an error in format, not necessarily in math.
1.4 The 30% Context Rule
Roughly 30% of Math questions are set in a real-world context (science, social studies, finance,
everyday scenarios). These are not harder mathematically, but they cost more reading time. Budget
for it: a word problem with a five-line setup is a 2-minute question, not a 95-second question.
KEY TAKEAWAY
Pacing is not “95 seconds each.” It is: easy questions in 45 seconds, medium in 90, hard in 150,
and skip anything that has eaten 90 seconds without a clear path forward. Mark it, move on,
come back. A skipped question costs 1 point; a blown 4-minute question costs 1 point plus two
other questions you never reached.
1.5 What the Adaptive Second Module Really Rewards
Because Module 2 branches on Module 1 performance, Module 1 is the highest-leverage 35
minutes of the entire test. Two consequences:
1. Do not gamble on Module 1. Guessing wildly on hard questions to “see if you get lucky” does
not help, because the branch is determined by a threshold, not by luck at the margin.
2. Accuracy beats speed in Module 1. Getting 18 of 22 right cleanly is worth more than getting 20
of 22 with three careless errors from rushing, because careless errors push you toward the easier
branch where the ceiling is lower.
1.6 A Realistic Target Map
Math Score Band Raw Correct What Separates You From the Band Above
600-650 about 22-28 of 44 Algebra fluency. You lose points to setup er-
rors, not to hard content.
650-700 about 29-34 of 44 Advanced Math. Quadratics and exponentials
stop being guesswork.
700-750 about 35-39 of 44 Problem-Solving. You stop misreading “per-
cent of” vs. “percent increase”.
750-800 about 40-44 of 44 Zero careless errors. You check units, signs,
and SPR formatting every time.
