Forklift Certification Test (OSHA-Compliant Operator Training and Evaluation)
The Forklift Certification Test is not a single national exam in the United States; rather, it refers to the training and evaluation process required by OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1910.178(l) for powered industrial truck operators. Under this standard, the employer is responsible for certifying that each operator has been trained and evaluated, meaning there is no universal "license" issued by a government agency. Training must combine formal instruction (lecture, video, written materials) with practical training (demonstrations and hands-on exercises), followed by an evaluation of the operator's performance in the actual workplace. Key test content areas include truck-related topics (controls, capacity, stability, inspection, refueling/charging) and workplace-related topics (surface conditions, load composition, pedestrian traffic, narrow aisles, hazardous locations). Operators must be evaluated at least once every three years, and refresher training is required after unsafe operation, accidents, or assignment to a different type of truck. The employer's certification record must include the operator's name, training date, evaluation date, and the identity of the trainer/evaluator. Third-party training providers (such as NCCER, Bureau Veritas, or online courses) may offer written and practical assessments, but the employer retains ultimate certification responsibility.
