Floral Design Certification
Floral design certification is a professional credential that validates a designer's mastery of design principles, mechanics, flower identification, and industry standards. The most internationally recognized credential is the Certified Floral Designer (CFD®) offered by the American Institute of Floral Designers (AIFD). There are three pathways to earn the CFD: completing coursework at an AIFD-approved education partner and passing the online exam based on The AIFD Guide to Floral Design with a score of 80% or higher; participating in the annual Professional Floral Design Evaluation (PFDE), which includes a written test and a four-hour hands-on design evaluation; or earning qualifying scores in the SAIFD Student Competition and then passing the online exam . CFDs must maintain status through 25 Continuing Education Units every three years and pay annual dues . In the United States, the Texas State Florists' Association (TSFA) offers a tiered pathway: a knowledge-based written test followed by Level 1 and Level 2 hands-on certifications . The Benz School of Floral Design at Texas A&M offers an Entry Level certification via a 100-question exam covering floral design history, flower identification, design basics, arrangement creation, and business management . In the UK, City & Guilds NPTC offers Level 2 through Level 5 floristry qualifications assessed primarily through coursework portfolios .
