Lab 4: Tectonic Landforms & Crustal Deformation
GEOG 1113L – Introduction to Landforms Lab
Name: _Kadian Jacobs____________
I. Crustal Deformation
1. What causes deformation of the earth’s crust? The shifting of plate tectonics (2 points)
2. What types of structures are formed by deformation? Folds and Fault (2 points)
3. Which of the following forces causes faulting? (1 point)
A. Tensional force
B. Compressional force
C. Shear force
D. All of the above
4. Describe the difference between stress and strain. Stress is the force applied over an area, and
strain is the change in the material due to stress. (3 points)
5. What is the difference between elastic and ductile deformation? Elastic is the material that
returns to its original form. Ductile is a material that does not revert to its original form. (2
points)

II. Mountains, Volcanoes, and Earthquakes
1. How is a mountain formed? Mountains are formed by plate tectonics moving toward each other
(Converging Boundary), moving away from each other (Diverging Boundary), and moving parallel
to each other (Transform Boundary). (3 points)
2. Describe the three main types of mountains. The three main types of mountains are fold
mountains, fault-block mountains, and dome mountains. Fold mountains are the most common
type of mountains and are formed when two tectonic plates collide. Fault mountains form when
two tectonic plates converge. Dome mountains are the result of molten rock from the mantle
pushing its way up onto the earth's surface. (6 points)
3. What percentage of the world’s active volcanoes erupt each year?500 active volcanoes and an
average of 25 erupts each year. = 0.05 x 100 = 5 So, 5 % of the world's active volcanoes
erupt yearly. (Hint: You have to do some math. Show your work.) (2 points)
4. Aside from the fact that living near a volcano can be dangerous, what is one benefit it would
provide? Fertile soil It is good for agriculture (2 points)
5. Name and describe the point above the focus of an earthquake. The epicenter is where the
earthquake is felt the most strongly. (2 points)
