Practice for 9BI0 Paper 1
Time allowed 1 hour 45 minutes
Total marks 90
Equipment Calculator, ruler, HB pencil
Before you start
• Write in black ink. A pencil may be used for graphs and drawings.
• Attempt every question and write each answer in the space below it; you may not need
all of the space.
• The number of marks for each part is given in brackets. Use it to judge how much to
write and how long to spend.
• Questions labelled with an asterisk (*) also reward a clear, logically sequenced answer in
which your points are connected.
• Show your working in calculations and give units where they are needed.
• Leave time at the end to read through your answers.

, Answer every question. Where a multiple-choice question has boxes, mark your chosen answer with a
cross. To change it, draw a line through the cross and mark the new box.
1 ATP is used by all cells as their immediate source of energy.
(a) Which bond is hydrolysed when ATP is converted to ADP and inorganic
phosphate? (1)
A a glycosidic bond
B a phosphodiester bond
C a bond between two phosphate groups
D a peptide bond
(Put a cross in one box.)
(b) Explain why ATP is suitable as the immediate energy source in cells. (3)
(c) At the start of glycolysis, glucose is phosphorylated using two molecules of
ATP. Explain the importance of this step. (2)
(d) Give the name of the three-carbon compound produced at the end of
glycolysis. (1)

, 2 A student used a simple respirometer to measure oxygen uptake by 5.0 g of
germinating peas at 25 °C. A tube containing glass beads was set up alongside it. Both
tubes contained potassium hydroxide solution, which absorbs carbon dioxide.
(a) The coloured liquid in the capillary tube moved 18 mm towards the peas in
10 minutes. The internal diameter of the capillary tube was 1.0 mm.
Calculate the rate of oxygen uptake in mm3 g−1 min−1. (3)
= ................................................ mm3 g−1 min−1
(b) Explain why the coloured liquid moved towards the peas. (2)
(c) Explain the purpose of the tube containing glass beads. (1)
(d) Cyanide inhibits the final enzyme of the electron transport chain. Explain
why cyanide quickly stops the production of ATP in the mitochondria. (4)
