AP Chemistry: Chemical Equilibrium — Complete Study Guide Equilibrium is one of the most tested AP Chemistry topics — and one of the easiest to mix up. This 15-page guide covers everything: Kc and Kp expressions, what K actually tells you, Le Châtelier's principle (concentration, pressure, temperature), Q vs. K predictions, RICE tables, the 5% rule, and Kp. It contains worked examples and practice questions for each. What's inside: Writing equilibrium expressions (and the mistakes everyone makes) Le Châtelier shifts made intuitive, with memory tricks Q vs. K: predicting direction in seconds RICE tables step-by-step with a full walkthrough Practice questions + complete answer key One-page final memorization sheet

Equilibrium does not mean “equal amounts.” It means equal rates.

Equilibrium is movement without net change

A+B⇌C+D

Forward reaction Reverse reaction
Reactants form products. Products form reactants.

At chemical equilibrium, the forward and reverse reactions continue, but they occur at the same rate. Because
the rates match, concentrations remain constant over time and there is no observable net change.

Core distinction: Constant concentration does not mean equal concentration. A system can contain much
more product than reactant and still be at equilibrium.

Six facts to know cold
Forward rate = reverse rate. No observable net change occurs.
Both reactions continue. Amounts do not need to be equal.
Concentrations stay constant. Equilibrium can be reached from either direction.

Stop-and-check: true or false?
At equilibrium, the reaction has stopped.
Reactant and product concentrations remain constant.
Product concentration must equal reactant concentration.
The forward and reverse rates are equal.
Correct pattern: False, True, False, True.

Explain it in one sentence
Why is equilibrium called dynamic?
