1.2 Explain the trends and social issues that impact care of women in the community.

Community Maternal Health and Maternal Infant health determinant MICH-06, MICH-12

-MICH-06: Reducing cesarian births among low risk women with no prior birth. C-sections

can provide better health outcomes to AT RISK women, but can be sources of clotting or

infection. Many women who are not at high risk of complications in birth get them, which

can cause unnecissary complications.

-MICH-12: increase the proportion of women of childbearing age who get enough folic acid.

Getting enough folic acid through food or supplements during pregnancy can protect infants

from neural tube defects, like spina bifida. The concentration of folate in a woman's red blood

cells shows whether she's getting enough folic acid. Nationwide efforts to add folic acid to

cereal grain products have helped reduce neural tube defects, and more recent efforts to add it

to corn masa flour may have the same effect.

1.3 Differentiate the role of community based maternal child health nurses from

hospital obstetric or neonatal nurses.

Community Maternal Health- There are many different kinds of community resources

availible for mothers and infants after childbirth or during pregnancy. General goals of these

programs are support healthy pregnancy practices, provide information on topics such as

breastfeeding, safe sleep, preventing unintended child injuries, and nutrition, encourage early

language development and early learning at home, teach positive parenting skills like reading,

playing, and praising good behaviors, work with caregivers to set goals for the future,

continue their education, and find employment and child care solutions, connect families to

,other services and resources in their community.

Perinatal nurse roles- Perinatal Nurses are those who work with pregnant women to ensure

healthy pregnancies before, during, and after childbirth. Perinatal nurses provide education

and resources about pregnancy and childbirth, and help oversee the mother and child during

pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum to ensure the health of both. Perinatal nurses may

practice in communities or in the hospital setting. Perinatal nurses may case manage high-risk

pregnancies and high risk infants. Often families who are very high risk are case managed

under federally funded maternal child health programs from pregnancy until the child enters

early childhood interventions or school where care is assumed by early childhood nurses.

1.4 Differentiate pediatric nursing roles from other areas of nursing practice.

Proper Delegation principles

Possible legal and ethical constraints arise regarding delegation in nursing. Therefore, the

American Nurses Association developed the five rights of delegation to assist nurses in

making safe decisions.

1:Right task

2:Right circumstance

3:Right person

4: Right supervision

5: Right direction and communication

Essential Components of Delegation:

· Responsibility: Based on individual states' nurse practice acts, registered nurses have a

professional duty to perform patient care tasks dependably and reliably.

,· Authority: Authority refers to an individual's ability to complete duties within a specific

role. This authority derives from nurse practice acts and organizational policies and job

descriptions.

Accountability: Accountability within the nursing context refers to nursing professionals'

legal liability for their actions related to patient care. During delegation, delegators transfer

responsibility and authority for completing a task to the delegate; however, the delegator

always maintains accountability for the task's completion. The registered nurse is always

accountable for the overall outcome of delegated tasks based on each state's nurse practice act

provisions.

1.5 Apply family centered care to the care of children.

Importance of Family Centered Care and related interventions

Family centered care is a collaboration of the healthcare team and the family. The family

participates in the planning, delivery, and evaluation of the mother's and child's healthcare.

Family centered care recognizes that the family is key to a mother's and child's wellbeing.

Core concepts of family centered care

-dignity and respect, information sharing, participation, collaboration

Benfits of family centered care

· Decreased levels of patient and family stress

· Increased likelihood of adherence to plans of care

· Reduced likelihood of medical error

· Improved patient/family sleep and nutrition

· Decreased disruption of normal patient/family routines and responsibilities

· Increased patient and family satisfaction

, 1.6 Identify the distinct ethical considerations related to pediatric nursing

Ethics

Some of the major areas of ethical issues in pediatric practice include:

· Autonomy, decision making, and consent

· Confidentiality and information sharing

· Potential conflict between parent and child

· Futile treatment

· "The child's best interest"

· Inadequate care, lack of consensus on care, and lack of continuity of care

· Prolonging the death process

There are four ethical principles in nursing:

1. Autonomy

2. Beneficence

3. Justice

4. Nonmaleficence

Unique ethical conflicts

- privacy and confidentiality: child vs parent. Privacy is based of developmental age, older

children have a need for more confidentiality that younger.

-HIPPA: conflicts regarding sharing information to family/non-guardians, how to respond to

a caller who is claiming to be parent

1.6 Identify the distinct ethical considerations related to pediatric nursing pt. 2

Potential Conflicts in Ethics in Pediatric populations

· Information Sharing
