lab Questions
1. What are chromosomes made of?
Chromosomes are made up of chromatin, which is a mix of DNA and proteins. Chromatin is
organized into smaller parts called nucleosomes.
2. Compare and contrast mitosis and meiosis, ensuring to detail the differences in both function
and in process. (Hint: Your response should be 4-5 sentences long.)
Comparison: Both mitosis and meiosis start with two chromosomes and both make new cells.
Differences: In meiosis, crossing over and synapsis happen, but this doesn’t occur in mitosis.
Mitosis happens in body cells (somatic cells), while meiosis makes reproductive cells.
3. Cancer is a disease related to uncontrolled cell division. Investigate two known causes for these
rapidly dividing cells and use this knowledge to invent a drug that would inhibit the growth of
cancer cells. (Hint: Your response should be 4-5 sentences long.)
Cancer is a disease where cells divide uncontrollably. Two known causes of this are
environmental factors, like exposure to harmful chemicals, and genetic factors, like inherited
mutations. I would design a drug that targets the receptors on cancer cells to stop them from
multiplying.

EXPERIMENT 1: OBSERVATION OF MITOSIS IN A PLANT CELL
Introduction Questions
1. State how you will calculate the number of hours each stage of mitosis takes based on
observations. Do so by either stating the “Hours of Stage” equation, or by discussing the
equation and its application. If you decide to insert an equation, you must use an equation
editor to properly state the equation with the correct symbols and fraction format.
To figure out how many hours each stage of mitosis takes, I’d use this formula: Hours of Stage =
(Number of cells in a stage / Total number of cells observed) × Total time for the cell cycle. So,
I’d count how many cells are in the stage I’m looking at, divide that by the total number of cells I
observed, and then multiply by the total time for the whole cell cycle. That would give me an
idea of how long each stage lasts..
2. In Table 1, below, predict how many hours of the 24-hour cell cycle you think each step takes.
Ensure you provide robust supporting evidence to back your prediction.
Table 1: Mitosis Predictions
I guess interphase takes about 21 hours, the mitotic phase lasts
Predictions
around 3 hours, and cytokinesis takes about 45 minutes.
The longest part of mitosis is interphase, and it lasts about 18 to 24
hours.
