ENGLISH GRAMMAR
PARTS OF SPEECH
A clear, practical guide for college learners
Learning objectives
By the end of this handout, you should be able to:
• Identify the eight traditional parts of speech.
• Explain the role each part of speech plays in a sentence.
• Recognize that a word’s part of speech can change depending on how it is used.
• Apply the concepts when analyzing and writing clear sentences.
Key idea
A part of speech describes the job a word performs in a sentence. Do not classify a word by its spelling
alone—look at its function and context.
What are parts of speech?
Parts of speech are categories of words grouped by their grammatical functions. They help readers understand how
ideas connect and help writers build sentences that are accurate, varied, and meaningful.
This handout presents the eight traditional categories: nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and
interjections. Some modern grammar frameworks classify determiners separately, while traditional school grammar often groups words
such as a, an, and the with adjectives.
